Who has been to London before? Have you ridden the subway before? Yeah, most people who have been to London have been on the famed London Underground. It’s just about the only way to get around the city with any speed. And if you’ve been on the Underground before, you most likely have heard the following:
Have you heard that before? Yeah, you can’t help but hear it because the dang thing plays every single time a train door opens and closes. It plays to warn you of the sometimes significant distance between the train door and the station platform. So if you are on the tube for only say 4 stops, you would have heard that phrase repeated in that same monotone voice at least 8 times. I think it would drive me crazy. More likely, though, I’d just tune it out.
Because most of the time that gap isn’t big enough to make a difference. Most of the time a straight train is pulling up to a straight platform. But at some stations the train pulls up to a curved platform, increasing the distance between you and your destination. Other times the platform is at a different height than the train. Either way there is a gap between where you are and where you’re going. And even though it doesn’t happen often, I can just imagine how messy it is when you don’t factor that gap into your tube experience! I mean can you imagine getting a heel, for you women, or the sole of your shoe stuck between the train and the platform and falling on your face while dozens of very busy people are running around and over you trying to get to wherever they’re going? It would be quite a mess, and quite embarrassing!
And just like the gaps that you see on the London Underground – we believe that all of us have similar gaps as we try to navigate our faith and our college experience. Some of those gaps are small subtle ones, others are larger more pronounced ones – but at some point many of us run into gaps between where we are and where we could be.
So we’re going to spend the semester talking about some of the gaps that we believe exist in our lives as we pursue faith. Again, some of them will be significant to you, others will more subtle. Some may not even be gaps right now in your life, but like the reminder on the Underground, we believe Scripture reminds us to be alert because we never know when that gap may become an issue in our lives.
