Our Vision
The Vision of InterVarsity's Greek IMPACT at UNC-Chapel Hill is to see fraternity and sorority students transformed by the freeing life that Christ offers. We believe that Jesus came to offer Greek students life to the full (John 10:10) and believe that Carolina can be a place where Greeks no longer conform to the patterns of the Greek system but are transformed by the renewing of their minds (Romans 12:2). Here we believe that true life is found.
HISTORY
InterVarsity’s ministry to Greek students UNC-Chapel Hill has been taking place for more than 40 years, with varying degrees of success and activity taking place throughout the decades. In the mid-80’s more than 100 fraternity and sorority students gathered regularly for worship and outreach, and many houses had IV-resourced Bible studies. By 2000, however, there were very few Greeks involved in InterVarsity. In late 2002 Dave & Kim Shepley moved to Chapel Hill with the vision to specifically reach Greek students who were un-reached by the Christian community at large and to show them true and freeing life in Christ. The group grew from a handful of students in January 2003 to more than 70 regularly committed Greeks in January 2007. Today Greek IMPACT continues to grow and add structures that ultimately serve the vision of introducing and reconnecting Greeks at Carolina to a freeing and real life in Christ.
Greek IMPACT through the years
Fall 2005 - Tension over the greater cause leads to renewed vision - a student organization which has been founded for the purpose of spreading the news of Jesus Christ to the Greek system. Our objectives are to provide a place where Greek students can feel comfortable with one another and can co-exist in a community that strives to live differently and seeks to know how faith can co-exist with their fraternity and sorority experience. Desire is to reach the people that otherwise wouldn't engage faith in college. Tina Williamson, Jenna Nash and Mallory Brown help bring structure and substance to Monday nights. Almost 100 Greeks attend Thanksgiving Feast. Follow up team is formed to intentionally follow up with newcomers.
Spring 2006 - First Ski Greek develops deeper community. Vision for FOCUS Groups is birthed as Cassie Schlenker and Amy Grantham lay the groundwork for students discipling students. |
