04.23.07 Those Who Wait On the Lord: There are two weeks of school left. For some it's a time to say goodbye to seniors we've known and loved seeing around for years. For others it's finishing this final week well with the many projects and papers that are still ahead. For most of you it's the finals that come after this week. It's the time of the year where the race is the hardest and the most intense. And it's the time of year where we feel our real need for God the most..... Video: "GI Year End Video"

04.09.07 Easter: Living the Resurrection:

As we talked about last week, and as many people in here experienced at Good Friday services last weekend - the Cross is a great thing. It’s not necessarily an enjoyable thing, but Christ’s death on the cross was a necessary action. He died a hard death on that Cross so that he could bare the weight of all of the sin of anyone anywhere who believes in Him. And I don’t know about you – but as I think about the sin that I cause in my life and in my heart and in my mind on a daily basis – I am SO thankful that because Christ died on the Cross that we know that God will never judge us for those things. The price has already been paid. BUT if you know the Easter story, if you know the story of Christ, you know that’s not the whole story. You know that death alone isn’t enough. In fact, if Christ only died on the Cross, then the result might sound a little like this story from CS Lewis…..

04.02.07 Easter: Remembering the Cross: Our Creator knew how our lives would unfold – and knew that if we were to truly live with purpose and passion that we’d need help. And so he sent his Son Jesus Christ, who lived on this earth more than 2,000 years ago, to live a life like ours in every sense, but still perfect in every way. He sent Jesus to be a model for the purpose and passion that we should strive to live for. And more than 2,000 years ago this Friday, that same Jesus Christ came face to face with his death bed.

02.12.07 David: Fat & Happy: Remember when Carolina went into Raleigh to play State. What happened? - Yeah, and can anyone tell me what Roy said to the media about the boys after the game? “We were too fat and happy. We thought we could win just by showing up, and you can’t do that. Every team in this league is good.” Not sure he’s right on the last part, but the beginning of the quote remains true – after blowing out Clemson, Georgia Tech, Wake, Arizona and Miami – the boys might have been a little content with where they were. Because of their success in the past, the boys lost focus. They got fat and happy – as Roy said, and paid the price by losing what could be a key game down the stretch. Have you ever gotten fat and happy like that in life? So content with where you are that you forget to focus on your goals or your purpose?

David: Just Because It Looks Good....: Have you guys ever had situations in your life where the timing or the opportunity just looked right, but God had bigger things in store for you? I believe that God has us walk through these steps sometimes because it really helps us check our sense of entitlement or control at the door. It helps us to truly seek and understand what purpose God has for us in this place and time. Andy Stanley, who’s a pastor in Atlanta, says that like David in the passage, we need to weigh opportunities in our life against three tests to see if they are truly godly opportunities: The law of God, the principles of God, and the wisdom of God.
Scripture: 1 Samuel 24

On Purpose: You Were Placed Here for a Purpose:10 years ago I joined a fraternity at Indiana. At the time I couldn’t tell you why I did – what the purpose of it was – I just did it. Shoot when I came to school I didn’t even really know what a fraternity was, and I probably wouldn’t have gotten involved in one if some guys on my hall weren’t going through rush. I don’t know if I did it to meet girls, for the partying, for the community or what – but for some reason I thought I needed to join a fraternity.
Scripture:Romans 9, Exodus 9

Song: "Lord You Have My Heart"
01.15.07 On Purpose: Living for Something: Have you ever woken up one day and thought to yourself – “I don’t know how to do this anymore?” Or worse – have you ever woken up and thought “I can’t do this anymore.” I can’t be in touch with God anymore because the stakes in college, in the greek system are just stacked so overwhelmingly against you? 12.04.06 Remember the Christ in Christmas: Ah Christmas. Time for tacky sweaters, Christmas Cocktails, lights, lights and more lights, blow up reindeer, bowl games – and of course presents. Afterall, that’s what Christmas means today, right? Or at least what our culture would often have us believe. It seems, doesn’t it – that we have replaced Jesus with Santa Claus. We’ve replaced a stable full of eager people anticipating a Savior with a room full of people hoping for a Playstation3. We’ve replaced “Come All Ye Faithful” for “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.” It seems an awful lot like we’ve forgotten the Christ in Christmas. Well today we’re going to take some time to remember what Christmas means to us – and how we can live for Christmas throughout the year. How Christmas in July can mean something entirely different than our culture would lead us to believe.

Spiritual Training Pt.III - Bible Study : I’m sure that many of us are either in or want to be in some sort of communication with Christ. But how many of us truly take the time to know who He is, where he came from and why we should live a certain way in response to that? why, then, for many of us in this room, myself included at times – do our Bibles sit on our bookshelves or our desks and gather dust, even as we continue to develop this relationship with Christ.I think this happens for 2 primary reasons:
1) We don’t understand the Bible
2) We don’t know what to do with it

Resource: New Ways to Study the Bible
11.13.06 Spiritual Training Pt.II - Bible Study : Last week I compared our journey to spiritual fitness with my journey to physical fitness - specifically through swimming. I mentioned that at the core of our fitness, we often fail to do one critical component – and that’s the pre-game activity. For some of us that’s stretching, although studies now show that stretching doesn’t necessarily help athletic performance. But for all of us, if we are to truly succeed in physical fitness, we need to some kind of warm-up. Very few of us can jump on a golf course and play 18 without hitting a few balls, or at least swinging a few clubs. Few of us can get on the tennis court and play a match without stretching our tennis muscles, and certainly I couldn’t get in the pool and expect to swim a mile without first doing some kind of aerobic warm-up. Not even Michael Jordan could get on a basketball court and expect to be on his game without some sort of warm-up routine. The same is true in our faith. So often we come to meetings like this, or we try to read our Bible study or listen to a sermon, or even go out into life and try to live a life of faith – and we forget to do the most basic form of stretching, or warming up – praying. We forget to invite God into our activities. Resource: 5 Ways to Pray

Spiritual Training: If anything like me, it’s the time of the semester where you wake up and realize that you’re lacking something in your life. I woke up 3 weeks ago, looked in the mirror and realized that I had been eating too many fraternity meals, and doing not enough exercise and that I needed to get into shape. So, I figured I’d do something that I’ve long enjoyed – go to the pool. So I loaded up my gym bag and went to Royer pool for the first time in about a year and a half So it wasn’t that bad, but it was interesting. I jumped in the pool all fired up and ready to go. I was pumped – I was going to instantly get into shape. Finished one lap – no problem. Two laps – I’m definitely on my game. Lap 3 – still working it. Lap 4 – getting harder. And let me tell you by lap 8 I was just about done. do you ever feel that way in your spiritual development? Like you want to get into spiritual shape but you just feel out of place? My guess is that most of us in this room who feel out of shape spiritually fall into one of 2 extremes:

  • We ARE the kid who has to take the swim test and are terrified because we have no idea what we’re doing. You’ve never really done this spiritual training thing before.
  • We are formerly trained spiritually but really have gotten out of spiritual shape lately, like I did in the pool – and now you are having a hard time getting back into training.

Well I believe that God wants us to be trained well spiritually....
