Campus Confidential

This year I have the honor of consulting Greek students and undergraduate InterVarsity staff at five other campuses in North Carolina and Virginia. Each campus is at a different stage of ministry growth and development. Click on the school below for an update on what is going on at each campus. And please be in prayer for the Greek students at these schools who are trying to start ministry within their fraternity, sorority, or Greek system at large with very little 'adult supervision'!

Duke University

Greek ministry at Duke was planted in September, 2002 and was staffed full-time until this summer. The regional leadership hopes to place another full-time staff here in the future, but for this year I get to help the 4 student exec team grow the ministry on campus.

It has been really interesting (and stretching at times) to work at Duke, as the

campus - and the ministry - is so vastly different than Chapel Hill, even though the schools are a mere 12 miles apart. The ministry was set up to be more house centered, and as such, much of the work takes place outside of traditional ministry walls. I have sensed, though, a need to develop a greater community within the Greek system specifically, and on Dukes campus in general - as the prevading mentality of the Duke student seems to lean towards an individualistic nature as opposed to a community-focus. The exec team buys into this shift in philosophy of ministry, but is limited in their impact and influence at this point. And as I have basically only 5 hours a week to dedicate to the campus - there is not much legwork I can put into the culture shift other than prayer, vision casting, and the occasional talk on Monday nights (they have between 8-18 students at their weekly meetings. Additionally, the majority of students involved in IMPACT at Duke are seniors, so it feels like one is constantly re-inventing the wheel year after year.

Pray for: Continued development of our 'community vision'; strong sophomores and juniors to emerge as leaders of the ministry; the exec team (3 seniors and a junior) as they are responsible for most of the work on campus.
